Prairie view shpe history
In the academic year of 1995, a SHPE Chapter was loosely chartered at Prairie View A & M University by Daniel Alcantar (President), and others. They held small fundraisers, and attended one National Conference from what is known. As there was a small Hispanic population due to the university being a HBCU, the SHPE-PVAMU Chapter eventually died out and went inactive.
However, in the fall of 2009 the chapters by laws were drafted with the help of Dr. Felecia Nave, and the Roy G. Perry College of Engineering. The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers Prairie View A & M University Student Chapter was officially recognized by SHPE National as a student chapter in October 2, 2010. The Chapter was re-founded by Debbie Zepeda (President 2009-2010).
Since then, the chapter has assisted a generation of talented young engineers in reaching their full potential via corporate networking, student workshops, mentoring, and tutoring. As well as giving back in the Prairie View Community with efforts such as SHPE-PVAMU’s Adopt a Highway Program, and participating in Pantherland Days for recruitment. The chapter has had 4 Presidents since its official establishment: Debbie Zepeda (2009-2010), Janet Orrelena (2010-2011), Jermain Goss (Fall 2011), and Juan F. Lopez (Spring 2012-current).
Currently, SHPE-PVAMU has developed into a Medium size chapter, and was recognized as the largest Medium Chapter within Region 5 with 52 registered members.
